Working in Product Development at DocuSign
We sat down with Cathy on the Product Development team in our Chicago office to learn more about why she decided to join DocuSign and what she loves the most about her work here.
What is your role at DocuSign?
I am a software engineer working on building out procurement use cases for third party contracts and contract lifecycle management.
Why did you choose to work at DocuSign?
For me, it was DocuSign’s values. Our leadership is focused on supporting employees to find and do the work of their lives by providing employees with meaningful work, the resources to learn, and a collaborative community. The excellent benefits and work-life balance are also a plus.
What do you love most about working at DocuSign?
I love how we work in a large company that has a small company feel – I am able to bond with my teammates while still having the opportunity to meet new coworkers and learn about their roles at the company. I also love the importance given to diversity. I am part of the DocuSign Women in Product Development Employee Resource Group, where I am able to get to know the other women in Engineering in my office and participate in fun events together, such as our annual trip to a holiday market in Chicago.
What motivates you in your job?
I enjoy contributing to a meaningful product that helps the environment by reducing the use of paper and that streamlines our users’ workflow by handling their contracts and paperwork electronically.
What is the most challenging part of your job?
The challenging part is balancing my eagerness to contribute with the need to learn more about the intricacies of our products.
How do you spend a typical day?
We start our mornings with a daily standup where we recap what we accomplished the previous day and our plan for today. We then pick up tickets from our scrum board and proceed with development. Every two weeks, we also have planning meetings to prepare for the next two-week sprint.
What type of people do you think thrive in your department?
Those who thrive in the department are eager to challenge themselves with new tasks, are willing to learn, and are open to collaboration.
What are some ways you contribute to the company's vision despite being new in your career?
Despite being new, I was given the opportunity to work on impactful projects. For example, I contributed to a project which was then showcased at a conference last November, which was super exciting for me. I was also given the opportunity to attend a career fair at my alma mater and speak with students about my experience working here at DocuSign.
Do people make friends at work at DocuSign?
Absolutely. I enjoy getting to know my coworkers during our lunch breaks and social events. The Discovering DocuSign event is a new hire bootcamp that all the new employees worldwide attend, and I am still in touch with some of the employees that I met from other countries. I was able to reconnect with one of my Parisian Discovering DocuSign friends when I attended our last internal Product Development conference in Chicago.
What sort of fun social events does the company host for employees?
The company hosts fun happy hours where you have the opportunity to meet other employees, and teams will often host outings or team lunches. The holiday party was a blast!
