This position
As a Principal Software Engineer, you will be directly responsible for designing, engineering and delivering the evolution of our Observability platform. Delivering high scale and highly available systems is part of the DocuSign engineering culture and our success in this revolves around our ability to understand how our systems are operating at all times and where we need to invest in to harden and improve them. We build complex distributed systems and our ability to do this successfully is dependent on the platforms and software you will build. Our ‘livesite' is the lifeblood of our engineering organization and the tooling you will work on ensures we can deliver on our commitments to customers. In support of these goals, you will develop and enhance key systems dedicated to monitoring product health and usage so that our development teams can quickly address incidents and continue to deliver high quality software in our fast paced, startup environment.

This position is an individual contributor reporting to the Director of Engineering and is designated Flex.

Responsibilities

  • Be a technical and domain leader within your team and across the engineering organization
  • Partner with our developers and SREs to provide tooling and services to enhance the observability of our systems
  • Design, develop and ship services in support of improving our observability goals
  • Engineer high scale, fault tolerant, distributed observability systems
  • Improve tooling to capture metrics, logs, traces at scale and building systems to make sense of that data through dashboard and visualizations

Basic qualifications

  • BS in CS, EE, Informatics or similar
  • 15+ years experience in software engineering
  • Experience in C#, C++, Go or an equivalent modern infrastructure languages
  • 10+ years experience building large scale distributed systems

Preferred qualifications

  • Experience with modern observability frameworks and projects (Prometheus, OpenTelemetry, Jaeger, Grafana, etc.)
  • Experience with big data architecture, big data platforms and pipelines
  • Experience with cloud services at scale on AWS, Azure and GCP
  • Experience with Kubernetes
  • Familiarity with observability in physical deployments, container environments and distributed micro services
