The DocuSign Summer Intern Program: Connections, Career Exploration and Learning Opportunities

Summer 2021 is upon us! We’re looking forward to onboarding fresh faces into the DocuSign family through our Summer Intern Program and reflecting on how things went last summer. While 2020 was a unique year, we strived to provide our interns with a robust experience that created opportunities for cross-functional connections, mentoring, career-enhancing projects, strong manager engagement, career guidance and a glimpse of what makes Docusign such an amazing place to work. We were committed to delivering this vision despite moving our DocuSign Summer Intern program to a fully virtual summer experience.

During the 12-weeks, we had two main goals for all interns:

  • To understand DocuSign as a company and how we do what we do on a daily basis -- to showcase the amazing culture that is core to DocuSign. Because how we get things done and what we get done is equally important to us.
  • To gain real-world skills and develop individual career goals through the work they did with their teams and the insights we provided about why our employees thrive at Docusign.

Onboarding with cohorts

We kicked it off by providing our interns with a warm welcome and onboarding experience designed just for them and their needs. Interns joined us on one of two cohort start dates intended to align with their academic calendars and to create a strong and immediate sense of community and connection within the cohorts. Their focused onboarding offered guidance on daily practicalities, walked through the summer experience calendar and introduced them to their support system of mentors, coaches and employee groups.

Building deeper relationships

Over the course of the 12-week program, interns not only gained valuable work experience, they developed relationships with one another, with their mentors and managers and a cross-section of employees at DocuSign. All interns were supported in this new virtual setting via regular office hours, dedicated slack channels, recruiter check-ins, personalized career coaching, career panels, presentations, professional development blogs and stipends for technology and event lunches.

Immersion

Despite only having 12 weeks with our interns, we strive to provide interns with the benefits of being truly immersed in the company culture with exposure to our business across multiple functional areas. With the deep support of company leadership, we endeavored daily to showcase who we are, what we do and why we do it.

Contests and exposure to senior thought leaders

We know working remotely can create a feeling of isolation for our interns, so we designed engaging weekly contests, random lunch groupings and a warm send off at the close of their internship. The new Security Scavenger Hunt and Impact Pitch Contest were huge hits and provided interns with heightened visibility and deeper connections to leaders at the company. In addition, one of our central programs for the summer was the Leadership Speaker Series where all interns had the opportunity to hear from top leaders at DocuSign such as: Dan Springer CEO, Tom Casey SVP of Engineering, Emily Heath Chief Trust and Security Officer, Joan Burke Chief People Officer, Charlotte Flanagan Senior Director Diversity & Inclusion, Amy Skeeters-Behrens Exec Director DocuSign IMPACT, Loren Alhadeff Chief Revenue Officer and Ryan Kelley VP, Commercial Sales.

The DocuSign Intern and University Team is dedicated to hiring, supporting and developing the future leaders of DocuSign. We know that by hiring interns and new grads from diverse backgrounds, our company can continue to thrive through their valuable contributions now and into the future. We hope that our summer interns and all new grads will truly consider DocuSign as a great place to launch their careers and see us as a company where they can have the opportunity to do the work of their lives.
